Box Hill United secured their safety in NPL2 with a fine 2-0 victory over Murray United at Wembley Park.
First-half goals from Todd Dekker and Denis Ilescu helped the hosts return to winning form at the right moment.
Following a composed and determined start, Box Hill dominated possession in the opposition half through quick passing and on 11 minutes, went ahead via Dekker’s classy goal. The frontman weaved his way into the box before planting a picture-perfect curler home.
Box Hill looked a side transformed and hungry for points. On 23 minutes, Dylan Tate’s firm free-kick hit opposition goalkeeper Matthew Mildren, who almost spilled it, but the score remained 1-0.
Murray United failed to have a sniff at the hosts’ goal, although on 39 minutes, striker Gonzalo Freddi skied a rare chance. Then on 45 minutes, Ilescu jumped the highest to meet Ryan Go's corner and doubled Box Hill's advantage.
A less intense start to the second-half saw Murray edge possession, but neither side initially managed to create any threat upfront. Still enjoying a two-goal cushion, Box Hill’s Philip Petreski fired a low free-kick at Mildren, who gathered it after a fumble on 64 minutes.
Petreski’s midfield colleague Alexander Schroen flew in with a diving header on the back of a cross from the right but went inches wide on 76 minutes. Late into the second period, Murray United went close with successive corners, and through Zac Walker, but to no avail, and they failed to turn the tide.
