Danish defender joins Box Hill United

December 2, 2018

Box Hill United senior men’s side have signed towering defender Dennis Nielsen, as head coach Con Karagiannidis continues his recruitment for 2019.
Hailing from Denmark, Nielsen brings a wealth of European football experience with him to Wembley Park.
After spending his formative years at Esbjerg fB in Denmark, he switched to Varde IF in search of first-team football in 2010. A productive season-and-a-half later, he joined Icelandic outfit Bi/Bolungarvik.
A spell with Egersunds IK followed in Norway, and he returned to the Faroe Islands with
TB/FC Suduroy/Royn in early 2018.
Excited to flag off his first club stint Down Under, Nielsen explained his decision to join United saying, “I am really happy to get everything sorted and be a part of a club like Box Hill United. Everything went so fast! I have had several talks with Con and Michael (assistant coach), and they convinced me that Box Hill was the right choice for me, both now and forward. That’s a big factor.”
The 27-year-old is now determined to prove himself, and said, “It’s not going to be easy. It’s not the first time I have moved [between] countries to a new league. So, I know I have to be humble, and start hard work.
“From what I have seen so far, there are definitely some good players, and everybody is so enthusiastic about football, especially here in Box Hill. That caught my eye from the beginning.
“You see Con and Michael in the training one hour before, preparing everything. They are the last two people to leave the training ground. That makes you want to get the best out of yourself as well.”
Speaking about his football journey, he said, “You have to adapt to so many different things so fast, especially because you come as a foreign player. There’s a higher demand on you. [There are] more eyes looking at you.”

The defender feels versatility is one of his strong points, and said, “I see things differently. I just don’t see things as a centre-back – I have played in full-back, in defensive-midfield. I know the thinking [behind] when you are playing in different positions. Sometimes, it’s impossible to make that pass or make that run because you have done it three times. So, it’s good for you [as] it opens up your eyes.”
