Promising defender Javier Marangos has put pen-to-paper on a new deal for the 2019 NPL2 season and is determined to build on the positives from last term.
The former Malvern City and Moreland Zebras full-back gave a good account of his abilities last season as part of the Box Hill United squad and was happy to accept the new offer.
Citing the camaraderie between the players and the club’s values as key reasons for his stay, Marangos said, “There is a really good core group of boys that came close together last year. Hopefully, we can build on that and play some good football.
“They (the club) do what they say. They are never two-faced. Even if it’s not in your favour, they’ll say it and they’ll do it. It’s just how they are and have always done. It’s one of the best things a football club can offer.”
Excited with the focus of pre-season training on building team chemistry, the 20-year-old added, “We have got together a good group of boys this year and pre-season’s been really good [so far]. There have been some highlights and good additions.
“There were definitely some positives, but more negatives [last year] – a lot of what we might have missed, as in creativity in the midfield and pace and flair forward. All we can do is to build on with the new group, with the players coming in, and hopefully turn those negatives into positives and do a lot better this year.”
Marangos broke through to the Richmond SC senior side from their youth ranks, getting a taste of regular NPL football. The youngster was also awarded the Coaches Award medal (U20s category) while at Richmond in 2015.
He is now keen to add to his repertoire at United, particularly impressed with the quality of the international signings. Marangos said, “Andres (new arrival from Columbia) is quality and brings a lot of flair – something you don’t often see in the NPL. So, it’s a massive X-factor for us. Dennis (Danish defender) is just rock-solid at the back. Hopefully, we can learn from them as a team, because of the experience, and transfer that into our game.”
