Box Hill United media caught up with club President Kristen Georgakopoulos to speak about her new venture and vision with the team, following her step-up from the position of Vice President in November 2018.
Here are some excerpts from the interview at Wembley Park:
Congratulations on your new role as Box Hill United President! How are you finding the transition?
Thank you. It is exciting! Having been Vice President for the past four years has enabled me to spend plenty of time with Alex Palmos (former Box Hill United President). So, the transition has been smooth. It has not been as a big move from Vice President to President as some of the responsibilities are similar. It is all around support, governance, being visible and advocating for Box Hill as a club and its members. I understand that it is a big job, but we have got good committee members to help and support.
We can look forward to a great season 2019!
What is your motivation for being involved in this role?
For me, it is important that our club is sustainable and has continuity around its strategy, vision and implementation, ensuring we build our club for the future for all our members and senior men, women, junior boys and girls, and our youngest MiniRoos players. At the end of the day it is the contribution of our committee and volunteers that enables all our players to get out on the park and play football for our great club and that is rewarding.
How would you review Alex Palmos’ tenure as Box Hill United president?
He has been absolutely amazing, and a strong part of Box Hill United. Operating a club is not an easy thing. It takes a lot of time and commitment, and as volunteers, to be able to do that for so long is a great achievement. He now has the chance to relax and spend more time watching the games.
What are your thoughts on the club’s administrative structure, from a leadership perspective?
It is about ensuring that we have the right people – in the committee and those that are in
sub-committees that have key skills and expertise to help support the running of the club. It is everything: from looking at strategies, planning and liaison with Council, Government and FFV in trying to advocate funding for facilities, grounds maintenance, equipment, merchandise, good administration, customer service and the operational roles for day-to-day running to get teams out on the park.
For me, the professional leadership role is not too dissimilar from the role of President. It is about good governance, setting direction and empowering the people you work with and above all, work together as a team to achieve results. The committee is no different to an organisation. It is about being able to bring people with you, to support them, and set some direction and strategies, to ensure that we are always a step ahead and looking forward to the future for years beyond us.
What is your take on the season gone by?
I think there were lots of positives about last year. [Although] there were some challenges with all clubs going through the first relegation year, and this was something that at points during the year was a concern for many, but the end result for Box Hill was positive. It is extremely important to have good coaching staff and good technical direction, striving for high performance and results at a senior level.
What is your overall vision with the club?
For Box Hill to continue to build on our strong reputation and continue to see a great style of football played across all our teams. For the club to continue to be a progressive football club that enables all our players to reach their highest potential. Our values are at the heart of everything we do and by living our values, Box Hill United SC continues to be a great place where members come together to play, support our teams and watch great football.
The club needs to be sustainable and forward-looking, working with key stakeholders on strategic initiatives, e.g., improve facilities and grounds now and into the future.
What is the immediate objective for you and the committee?
The immediate objective for everybody, after a bit of a rest getting through Christmas, and start gearing up for the 2019 season launch. I look forward to the continued hard work by the committee and all those in support roles, e.g., team managers, coordinators, etc. in making Box Hill the great place to be.
What is your message to Box Hill United fans for the new season?
Firstly, I would like to wish all our Box Hill United members and supporters a very happy and safe New Year. I am looking forward to a great 2019 season. I would like to see you at our games whether it is men’s, women’s, junior boys, girls or our MiniRoos, to support our players and cheer them on. Go Box Hill!
