Box Hill United senior women’s head coach Jorge Leon praised his squad’s “commitment and composure”, although the prevailing Covid-19 conditions forced the 2020 NPLW season to be cancelled.
Our senior women began preparations for season 2020 in November 2019, working hard towards their NPLW season-opener against Bayside United at Wembley Park on 21 March, 2020.
But with the first set of lockdown restrictions initiated by the Victorian government in March, the NPLW season was postponed.
While in isolation, the senior squad rigorously followed the club’s stay-at-home training routine, and remained connected through digital platforms.
After the staggered easing of Covid-19 restrictions and Football Victoria’s updated training and competition guidelines, our women’s team were phased back into non-contact training in the last week of May – only to be disrupted once more after a second Stage 3 lockdown phase was reintroduced early July.
Football Victoria then announced the decision to cancel this year’s senior season competition.
Coach Leon has issued the following message for our senior women's team:
I am extremely pleased with the level of commitment and composure [our] women’s squad demonstrated through the fluidity of what we now know as an ever-changing environment in challenging times.
The team adapted well throughout the return to football practice and the adjustments that came with it. Catch-up Zoom meetings allowed for the team’s cohesiveness and support to continue during lockdown.
I am proud of the efforts made by everyone in keeping up with their strength [and] conditioning and training schedules during lockdown.
It is very disappointing to know that the season has been cancelled. However, a clear decision is appreciated too. We understand that it is in the best interest of all involved, and that the health and welfare of our players is paramount.
I am very much looking forward to the 2021 season and playing football.
I would like to thank the senior women’s squad, the coaching staff, the board, and the Box Hill United club community for all their efforts and support during these unprecedented times.
